Laboratory Basics and Quality Assurance and Quality Control (QA/QC) in a wastewater treatment laboratory.
This class will cover the basics of laboratory testing and the relevant QA/QC as outlined in Standard Methods for the Examination of Water and Wastewater (SM) and the current Method Update Rule to 40CFR136. In-depth discussions covering paperwork of SOPs, bench sheets, reagent water testing, supplies, and equipment will also be covered. SM sections 1000 and 9000 will be referenced throughout, as well as EPA and IDEQ paperwork guidelines.

Jessica Barnes is the Vice President and General Manager for a family-owned local glazing company. She previously served as an Air Quality Monitoring Analyst at the Idaho Department of Environmental Quality (IDEQ), Laboratory Manager at the City of Blackfoot Wastewater Treatment Plant, and laboratory analyst at the City of Nampa Wastewater Treatment Plant. She holds Bachelor of Science degrees in Chemistry and Mathematics-Physics from The College of Idaho and earned her Master of Business Administration (MBA) from Northwest Nazarene University in 2024.
Jessica began her professional career in environmental science at the City of Nampa Wastewater Treatment Plant in December 2011 as a Laboratory Technician I. In January 2014, she became Laboratory Manager at the City of Blackfoot Wastewater Treatment Plant. She currently holds Laboratory II and Operator I licenses.
In the fall of 2018, Jessica joined IDEQ’s Idaho Falls regional office, working in the Solid Waste, Remediation, and RCRA Division. In early 2019, she transitioned to the Boise regional office, where she worked in the Air Quality Monitoring Division.
Jessica is active in professional education and training. In 2014, she presented a course for SEIOS titled "Quality Assurance/Quality Control (QA/QC) Paperwork" for 0.2 CEUs. The course addressed QA/QC practices outlined in the 2012 Method Update Rule (MUR) and the Standard Methods for the Examination of Water and Wastewater for laboratory procedures. She also delivered a 0.1 CEU course on sampling requirements using the MUR and the Lemuel Walker memo.
In 2017, she presented at the Idaho Operators Conference for NIOS, offering a 0.2 CEU course on QA/QC practices in wastewater laboratories. In her 2022 presentation for SEIOS explored the foundational elements of QA/QC from the Standard Methods (22nd Edition) and the Method Update Rule to 40 CFR 136, with in-depth discussion on SOPs, bench sheets, reagent water testing, and compliance documentation based on EPA paperwork guidelines.
